News Release: Cimarron Gathering Place Offers Age-Friendly Community Space at 4H Event Center

Ouray County, Colo. — The Ouray County 4H Event Center is proud to announce the opening of Cimarron Gathering Place, a new age-friendly community space designed for older adults in Ouray County. This initiative aims to provide a welcoming environment for social activities, camaraderie, and entertainment, enriching the lives of local residents.

Cimarron Gathering Place will operate as a pilot program from October 27 to December 31, 2026. The project is a collaborative effort led by community members and the Ridgway-Ouray Community Council (ROCC) - Age-Friendly Taskforce/Advisory Council, with support from Ouray County and Region 10.

The grand opening is scheduled for October 27, beginning at 9 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m. at the Ouray County 4H Event Center. Attendees will be treated to tea, coffee, and snacks and are encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions for future activities. Carolyn Dresler, a member of ROCC and the planning team for Cimarron Gathering Place, stated, “We look forward to community participation in our open house and other events, offering feedback and suggestions on activities and volunteer opportunities.”

During the pilot phase, Cimarron Gathering Place will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., unless other programs are scheduled at the 4H Event Center. Planned activities include crafts, low-impact physical exercises (such as Tai-Chi and chair Yoga), meet and greets, potlucks, lectures, and more. A special Friendsgiving luncheon is slated for Tuesday, November 24.

Colorado's designation as an Age-Friendly state by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) underscores the importance of such initiatives. Ouray County was recognized as an age-friendly community by AARP in March 2026. Addressing social isolation and mental health issues, which are prevalent in rural areas, is crucial. Over fifty percent of Ouray County’s population is over 50 years old, with the largest demographic being those over 70.

The centrally located Ouray County 4H Event Center provides an accessible venue for this new endeavor, aligning with community needs and aspirations. We wish Cimarron Gathering Place great success in fostering an engaging and supportive environment for older adults in Ouray County.
