Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Naval Support Activity Portsmouth Appreciative of Emergency Response to Bomb Threat

Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Naval Support Activity Portsmouth thanks local and Navy emergency response partners following a reported bomb threat Sept. 29 that prompted protective actions within the shipyard’s Controlled Industrial Area.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., a Norfolk Naval Shipyard employee reported to a supervisor that an explosive device had been placed in Building 510. Shipyard law enforcement and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were notified immediately.

Personnel in nearby affected buildings were evacuated. Personnel elsewhere in the Controlled Industrial Area were directed to shelter in place while emergency responders assessed the situation. Law enforcement detained the individual associated with the report approximately 15 minutes later.

Emergency responders from Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk supported the response, along with Navy security personnel, explosive detection canine teams and Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians.

“We are grateful for the immediate support provided by our community partners,” said Capt. R. Stephen Ramsey, commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Portsmouth. “They heard a friend needed help and they came immediately. I can’t think of anything more American than that. Thank you on behalf of the more than 10,000 people who work at America’s Shipyard!”

Rear Adm. Kavon “Hak” Hakimzadeh reiterated being thankful for the emergency response and that personnel should report bomb threats and take them seriously.

“This incident is a reminder that every member of our team has a responsibility to report suspicious activity or concerning statements immediately,” RDML Kavon “Hak” Hakimzadeh said. “The employee who spoke up enabled a rapid, coordinated response. If you see or hear something concerning, report it through the appropriate channels without delay.”

Responders conducted protective sweeps of Building 510 and the surrounding area. Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel completed their assessment, and the affected area was cleared later that evening.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the incident. Norfolk Naval Shipyard will not release the identity of the individual or discuss details that could affect the ongoing investigation. Force protection conditions at NSA Portsmouth have not changed as a result of this incident.
