Public Notice -Kentucky Fall Fire Hazard Season Begins October 1

Kentucky’s Fall Forest Fire Hazard Season begins October 1 and continues through December 15.

During this period, Kentucky law restricts outdoor burning because dry vegetation and other conditions can allow fires to spread quickly.

What you need to know

From October 1 through December 15, burning of flammable materials in or within 150 feet of woodland or brushland is prohibited between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Burning in these areas is permitted between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., or when the ground is covered with snow.

Before burning, remember to:

  • Clear at least a 10-foot area of vegetation around your burn pile.
  • Keep your burn pile small and controllable.
  • Have a shovel and a source of water nearby.
  • Stay with your fire until it is completely extinguished.
  • Check with your local fire department and local government for additional restrictions or ordinances before burning.

⚠️ Remember

The fall fire hazard season is a seasonal burning restriction, not automatically a statewide burn ban. Local burn bans may be issued when conditions create an increased wildfire danger.

Please burn responsibly and help prevent wildfires in our community.
