Spokane County Commissioner and 2026 Board Chair Mary Brooks Delivers Annual “State of the County”

This afternoon, more than 400 people attended Greater Spokane Incorporated’s annual “State of the County”. The sold-out event featured Spokane County Commissioner and 2026 Board Chair Mary Brooks, who is retiring at the end of the year. Brooks also presented fellow-retirees, County Auditor Vicky Dalton and Judge Annette Plese with ‘Lifetime Achievement Awards’ for their decades of service to Spokane County.

With the theme of “Strength in Resiliency,” Brooks highlighted the county’s programs, projects and services, many of which have received national recognition in areas such as public safety, infrastructure development, and community amenities. Among the presentation’s highlights was the county’s response to the Spokane Complex Fires, addressing the opioid and behavioral health crisis, the Safe and Healthy Task Force, and the investment of ARP funds in community-based organizations, such as Partners Inland Northwest.

Delving into the county’s 2027 budget, Brooks outlined the impact of unfunded and under-funded mandates. “Every new mandate without funding competes with deputies, roads, courts, parks – and the other services residents rely on every day,” Brooks said, while assuring the audience that the county will have a balanced budget in 2027.

Brooks also touched on county-funded improvements at Avista Stadium, the Plante’s Ferry Sports Complex, and the opening of Camas Meadow Regional Park.
