Grand County Sheriff's Office Celebrates Opening of New Animal Shelter

GRAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW ANIMAL SHELTER
GRAND COUNTY, CO- The Grand County Sheriff’s Office joined community partners on Saturday, September 26, 2026, to celebrate the grand opening and leash-cutting ceremony of the new Grand County Pet Pals Animal Shelter at 505 Park Lane in Granby.
The new facility reflects years of planning, fundraising and community support. The Sheriff’s Office thanks Grand County Pet Pals for leading the fundraising effort and the donors, volunteers, local governments and community partners who helped make the new shelter possible.
Planning for the shelter’s future began in March 2023, when Sheriff Brett Schroetlin and Grand County Pet Pals representatives met with the Grand County Board of County Commissioners. The previous shelter had operated for 25 years on land owned by the Granby Sanitation District. Its lease was scheduled to end in December 2025 because the district needed the property for expansion. The district extended the lease month by month while the new shelter was completed. The Sheriff’s Office is grateful to the Granby Sanitation District for its partnership over the decades and for providing the additional time needed for the transition.
County leaders and Pet Pals considered several options for continuing shelter services in Grand County. Under the current arrangement, the Sheriff’s Office Animal Control section operates the shelter and field operations with three full-time, year-round Grand County Government employees. Grand County Pet Pals supports animal care and provides adoption services.
The Board of County Commissioners approved a 2026 Sheriff’s Office budget of $358,000 for Animal Control and shelter personnel and operating expenses. Grand County Government also has a 10-year lease for the new shelter at an annual rent of $38,400, with an annual review based on the Cost-of-Living Index.
“We are grateful to everyone who helped bring this new facility to life,” said Sheriff Brett Schroetlin. “It reflects what our community can accomplish when we work together to care for animals in Grand County.”
The shelter is temporarily closed while staff move into and set up the new facility. It is scheduled to reopen to the public on Thursday, October 1.
