USAG Rheinland-Pfalz community refresh their safety skills with fall motorcycle safety ride

BAUMHOLDER, Germany -U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz hosted fall motorcycle safety ride on September 18th. Nearly two dozen riders from the Kaiserslautern Military Community and other organizations participated in the final safety ride of the year.

The motorcycle safety ride started with a briefing at a classroom on Baumholder Kaserne where the riders had assembled. Representatives were there from the garrison’s safety office, along with a couple of motorcycle mentors. They briefed the riders on safety, hazards and what to look out for along with the plan for the ride itself.

There are many safety tips, but one big safety tip that was taught was the See System which stands for Search, Evaluate and Execute.

Search around you for potential hadzards Evaluate any possible hazards, such as turning cars, railroad tracks and animals Execute the proper action to avoid the hazard

This was a good reminder for riding safely in traffic. The SEE strategy is a mental system for safe motorcycling. If the riders use this system effectively, they will have safer and happy miles on their motorcycle.

Once the safety brief was done riders conducted a pre-ride safety inspection of their motorcycles by using the T-CLOCS method. T-CLOCS stands for tires and wheels, controls, lights and electrics, oil and other fluids, chassis, and stands. Riders doubled up checking each other’s motorcycles and following this they staged for ride and ventured off.

“The purpose of the Motorcycle Mentor and Safety Ride is to foster a culture of safety, enhance rider skills, and ensure that all riders and their equipment comply with Army and USAREUR-AF regulations to help prevent motorcycle-related incidents.” Said Andres Reta, contract management support officer at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.

Reta who has over three decades of riding experience and has participated in safety rider in the area for five to seven years added, “Just as importantly, these rides reinforce safe riding habits and keep essential skills fresh in everyone's mind. Motorcycle riding skills are perishable, and even experienced riders benefit from regular practice, mentorship, and reminders of the hazards we encounter on the road”.

One of the main goals is to help every participant become a safer, more confident rider while promoting camaraderie and a shared commitment to motorcycle safety throughout our community.

For Reta, who has over three decades of riding experience, it is always a good thing to brush up on safety skills for all riders no matter what level of experience they have. Additionally, it takes to plan for the safety ride to take place. This is to ensure that everyone enjoys themselves and is safe during the ride.

Planning a ride takes quite a bit of work to pull off a successful one. Sgt. 1 st Class Ethan Thiel, assigned to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, has been riding since he arrived in Germany in 2024 emphasized what it takes to successfully plan a ride from start to finish. “You have route planning and you need to keep in mind the ability to lead riders of all different skill levels and keep everyone safe.” Thiel added that planning several rests stops as well as a good lunch spot is very helpful to all the riders. It gives the rider a chance to rest and relax for a few moments plus get some much-needed fuel for the body as they continue the journey throughout the ride.

Those interested if future safety rides please check with their unit motorcycle mentor or contact the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz safety office at DSN 541-2300 or commercial 06111-43-541-2300 and by email at usarmy.rheinland-pfalz.id-europe.mbx.garrison-safety-office@army.mil. Those who missed the ride will have another opportunity in spring around the April or May timeframe of 2027.
