Local Partnership Strengthens Nutrition Services and Connects Older Adults to Community Resources

September 23, 2026

A major renovation has taken place at Meals on Wheels of Greater Spokane County, creating a larger, more efficient kitchen designed to help the organization continue providing nutritious meals and meaningful connections to older adults throughout Spokane County for years to come.

The renovation was made possible through the KXLY Extreme Team and the generosity of local businesses, volunteers, and community partners. As the project unfolded, crews and volunteers helped transform the kitchen and strengthen Meals on Wheels’ capacity to prepare and deliver meals to older adults throughout the community.

“I loved this one (MOWGSC Kitchen), I didn’t know much about it… I saw that we had a lot of potential to help” Mark Peterson, KXLY.

Meals on Wheels of Greater Spokane County is an important community partner of Aging & Long Term Care of Eastern Washington (ALTCEW), the local Area Agency on Aging serving older adults, adults with disabilities, and their families across the region. Through partnerships with local organizations, ALTCEW helps connect people with resources, programs, and services that support independence, health, safety, and quality of life.

ALTCEW provides funding and support to community organizations, including Meals on Wheels of Greater Spokane County, to help ensure essential services are available to residents who need them. Meals on Wheels currently delivers approximately 230,000 meals each year to over 1,000 individuals.

“Meals on Wheels of Greater Spokane County is an important partner in our community, and we are proud to support the work they do,” said Lynn Kimball, Executive Director of Aging & Long Term Care of Eastern Washington. “The Extreme Team renovation is a wonderful example of what can happen when local organizations, businesses, volunteers, and community agencies come together around a shared goal. It also provides an opportunity to remind our community that Meals on Wheels is one part of a much larger network of services available to support people as they age or navigate disability and long-term care needs.”

More Than a Meal

For many older adults, a Meals on Wheels delivery provides more than nutritious food. It can offer an important connection to the community, reduce isolation, and provide an opportunity for someone to check in and make sure a person is doing well. These services can help older adults maintain their independence and continue living safely in their own homes.

For individuals and families who need support beyond nutrition, ALTCEW serves as a local, unbiased resource for navigating aging, disability, long-term care, and caregiving services. Whether someone is looking for help at home, caregiver support, transportation, information about long-term care options, or other community resources, ALTCEW can help individuals understand their options and connect with appropriate services.

“People do not always know where to start when they need help, particularly when their needs change or become more complex,” Kimball said. “As the local Area Agency on Aging, our role is to help people navigate those choices. We are here to listen, provide information, and connect individuals and families with the resources that best fit their circumstances.”

The Extreme Team renovation provides an opportunity to celebrate the work of Meals on Wheels of Greater Spokane County while also highlighting the broader network of organizations working together to support older adults and adults with disabilities across Eastern Washington.
