County Announces Future Brunswick 50+ Community Center, Shares Results of Feasibility Study
FREDERICK, Md. – Yesterday, Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater announced the location of the future Brunswick 50+ Community Center and released the results of the County’s 50+ Community Center Feasibility Study.
“The Senior Center Feasibility Study gives us a comprehensive roadmap—one that shifts us from relying on repurposed facilities to investing in purpose-built, modern senior centers across Frederick County,” said County Executive Fitzwater. “For Brunswick, the study’s recommendation is clear: this community needs a right-sized, accessible, intentionally designed center for programming, wellness, social connection, and recreation. I am thrilled that we have the space to turn that vision into reality.”
This feasibility study was developed by the Division of Aging and Independence in partnership with MGT Impact Solutions. It outlines a long‑term strategy to meet the needs of the county’s rapidly growing older adult population and confirms the need for larger, modern, purpose-built facilities.
As a step toward implementing the study’s recommendations, Frederick County has purchased 13.4 acres from the Hope Family to build a new Brunswick 50+ Community Center. This future center will play a vital role in providing expanded services and programs designed to address the growing needs of older adults. It will be the first stand-alone, purposely build 50+ Community Center in the county. Construction is expected to begin in Fiscal Year 2028.
Recommendations from the 50+ Community Center Feasibility Study emphasize integrating senior centers with housing, healthcare, and mixed‑use development to improve access, boost participation, and support long‑term sustainability.
The study also recommends a tiered model to ensure appropriately sized, accessible facilities across the county. Suggested future locations include East County (Walkersville/Woodsboro), the Southeast Corridor (Urbana/New Market), the Frederick urban core, and West County (Brunswick/Middletown).
Frederick County has one of the fastest-growing 65+ populations in Maryland. By 2035, one in five residents will be 65 or older, and the 75+ population is expected to grow 40 to 60 percent in many areas of the county. Most current senior centers are overcrowded or located in repurposed buildings not designed for today’s programs.
