Tell us about Panda's Song.

What if the very thing that makes you feel invisible is what makes you truly special?

Pamela Panda lives in a rainforest bursting with colour but when she looks at herself, she feels plain, unsure, and out of place. Surrounded by animals who seem brighter and bolder, Pamela begins to wonder if she really belongs. With the help of her kind-hearted friends and their shared curiosity about the wonders of creation, she discovers a gentle but powerful truth: every creature has a purpose, a place, and a beauty all its own.

Panda’s Song is a heartwarming children’s story that celebrates self-acceptance, friendship, and the joy of being exactly who you are. Filled with humour, imagination, and thoughtful moments, the story explores confidence, kindness, and accepting differences in a way that young readers will instantly connect with. Children will delight in the animals’ playful debates about how the sky was painted, feel reassured by the strength of community, and come away with a stronger sense of self-worth.

Perfect for read-aloud story time, classrooms, and bedtime, Panda’s Song inspires creativity, empathy, and confidence in children of all ages. Life-affirming and beautifully uplifting, it reminds every child of an essential truth: you are special, you belong, and the world needs you just as you are.

What inspired you to write Panda's Song?

During my years as a nurse, it broke my heart to see young people self-harm or overdose on drugs because they didn’t feel beautiful. Some of them were bullied or called names because of their looks. Those experiences stayed with me and became the heart of Panda’s Song. I wanted to reach children early with a message of self-worth, to help them understand that they are unique, valued, and enough just as they are. Just as important, I wanted to show the power of community: what can happen when children support one another instead of tearing each other down. In the story, when Panda finally finds her voice, every animal sings along. That moment reflects my deepest hope, that when a child begins to believe in themselves, they are met not with silence, but with encouragement, connection, and the reassurance that they are never alone.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

Growing up in Ghana, I was surrounded by a rich oral tradition where storytelling was at the heart of community life. Our ancestors used stories to teach kindness, empathy and shared responsibility, and music was an essential part of making those lessons unforgettable. That heritage deeply shapes how I write today.

In Panda’s Song, I draw on those traditions by weaving storytelling with music to create an experience that connects, teaches, and stays with young readers. The song Panda sings was composed with the help of my daughters, making the story not only a reflection of my cultural roots but also a celebration of family, creativity, and the timeless power of stories to bring people together.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

The message I hope readers carry with them is the power of supportive living, of looking out for one another and choosing kindness over comparison. When we lift each other up, something joyful happens. Just as in Panda’s Song, music, friendship, and shared encouragement can transform how we see ourselves and remind us that joy grows when it’s shared.
